The archaeological remains in Karahantepe, where archaeological excavations have been carried out since 2019 within the scope of the Taş Tepeler Project, will be covered with a protective roof to preserve them from the negative effects of the open air.
Stating that temperature differences and desert winds pose a threat due to its location, Prof. Dr. Necmi Karul emphasised that almost all the structures unearthed since the beginning of the excavations should be preserved in-situ.
Karul stated that simultaneously with the excavations, consolidation and restoration works are being carried out to protect the exposed building walls, however, these processes were insufficient to protect them from the negative effects of the open air and the construction of a protective roof became mandatory.
One of the important parameters of the design to be implemented is to have a large-span structure with minimum intervention to the archaeological site. In addition, the harmony with the topography and preserving the silhouette are among the design decisions. In order to protect the area, which will expand as the excavations progress, a design and structure system that allows for expansion by articulating with each other was determined.
